Keywords are King

Keywords run the internet, how far could you go trying to search for something on the internet or in your phone book for that matter without a basic word or two to get there. This is how the search engines and you find what you are looking for.

Finding the right keywords for your website or advertising business can be very confusing with everybody trying to sell you the perfect tool for keyword research.

Picking Keywords

Get inside your customers head, think like their thinking. Sometimes the best keyword tool is right between your ears. What your website, newsletter, E-mail or ad is about is where you start. You should try to put yourself in your future customers shoes. What would you type in to go to your site. If your site was about dogs, dog would be too general unless you were looking for information to write articles. You therefore would not be a good prospect to draw to your site because you're not looking to buy.

Getting specific

If you want to find something on the internet you should try to be as specific as possible. For example, let's say you're looking for a car, if you just typed car you would get every kind of car in the world. On the other hand if you got specific you could find exactly what you wanted in a shorter time. Let's take that vehicle search you are going to do and add a manufacturer(Ford), a style(pickup truck) a model(F150), a year(2005), engine size(8 cylinder) or another factors and you will get better results. You can also add your zip code to a search and you will get results locally if people are advertising geographically.

Expand Your List and Narrow

Let's go back to the dog website and think. How many things to do with dogs can you think of. Just to get started you could have general topics that are related to all dogs like, dog training, dog food, walking dogs, flea and heartworm problems, dog collars, or dog bathing. This is just the tip of the iceberg. We haven't even gotten into breeds. You could have a website for each individual breed if you wanted to. This would be niche, or a specific area of a larger category.

Keywords for Advertising

Keywords are how you will get people to come to your website, without people you won't make any money. Even if you're purpose isn't to make money online, having some Adsense ad's or a few items for sale will pay the expenses of the sight. If you have a non-profit organization knowing how to use keywords will be a plus. Raising money for a non-profit organization is no different than running a regular ad, the only difference is where the money goes.

How To Use Keywords

If your are writing an ad you want to include your keyword in the title. You should also use your keywords in the body of the ad or article, but not to excess. This can be difficult sometimes with a pay per click ad because you are limited to a certain number of characters you can use. A character is anything that takes up space. That empty space between two words count as a character.

Let's say you are selling shoes, your ad could say "Shoes for sale" I know it's dull but we are looking at the keywords here. This keyword is very general, there are very many types of shoes let alone all the colors. A general keyword costs more to use in a pay per click, it will also be very hard to compete against in natural traffic, because there will be tons of competition already there.

Here is where you need to be more specific with your keywords, instead of shoes you can use a type like loafers or wing tips. You could also add a color. If you do not carry a product or a color do not include it in an ad just to get traffic. People remember this and won't give your site any credibility. Once you get a bad reputation it will be hard to regain peoples trust.

How to Break down Keywords

Break your keywords up into smaller groups by dividing them into smaller related groups. Here is another example. Let's say you have store that sells musical CD's, tapes, videos and so on. You want to tell your potential customer exactly what you have. For instance you may have Eric Clapton's "Pilgrim" album on CD but not on tape or a video.

If you provide exact information people are going to come back to you, because you save them time and aggravation looking around. People do not like wasting time this way. There are much more enjoyable ways to waste time. This will build a good customer relationship because they can easily find what they want. Pretty much like going to a convenience store for milk instead of a super market, you are making their life easier also price won't be as important on a trusted site as long as it's not absurd.

Pay per Click

Here is where you will save a lot of money if you can find those keywords people are typing in their search box. If you get into the pay per click marketing you will find that Google rewards the advertisers who are the most accurate, so you're not bidding on keywords just with money or against big companies that can afford to throw their investors money away. The other search engine companies are also trying to make the search process more successful for their users.

Adsense

Adsense is another reason for keyword research. With keyword research you can find out what keywords are paying. The higher a keyword costs the better for those with adsense on their website. You get a percentage of the keyword cost which Google controls. Websites can be built around these high paying keywords. An adsense article is in the near future.

There are quite a few free keyword tools that can be useful to get the ball rolling, also keep brainstorming and thinking what would you type into the search box to find dog training not everybody looking for dog training will type this exact phase even though that is what they want.

WordTracker is a top of the line keyword service with plans from one day to one year for their service but you can use their free online keyword tool here.

Overture Search Tool Done?

Overture(yahoo) used to have a keyword tool online that everyone used but I haven't been able to get it to work lately. I think that they are doing away with it but they aren't sure how to do it. If you have an account with yahoo you can use their tools.

Mooter Keyword Relevance

Another tool I found works different than the regular ones. It brings up clusters of words rather than individual words. You can get there by cliking here

Not an Exact Science

People will type in oddball things you would not think when searching. One thing to realize, English is a second language for many people. The internet was started in the U.S. So typing something into a search engine in a foreign language probably isn't all that easy. You will notice this in the results from a keyword research tool also it is a robot(computer) that's returning the data.

Paid Keyword Resources

It's nice to to have some free sources to get started, but to find keywords that could make you a lot more money you have to dig deeper into search engine data and that costs money. Here are some Paid keyword research tools that I have found to be worthwhile.
